ROI Calculator
Calculate your return on investment, net profit and annualized return from the initial and final values.
Calculate your return on investment
The ROI Calculator measures how profitable an investment was. Enter what you put in and what it's worth now, and it shows your total return on investment, your net profit, and — if you add the holding period — your annualized return. It's a quick way to evaluate and compare investments of any kind.
What is ROI?
Return on investment (ROI) expresses your gain or loss as a percentage of what you invested. The formula is simple: (final value − initial investment) ÷ initial investment × 100. An ROI of 50% means you made half your money back as profit. ROI is the universal language for comparing how well different investments performed, regardless of size.
Why annualized return matters
Total ROI alone can mislead, because it ignores time. A 50% return over one year is excellent; the same 50% over ten years is mediocre. Annualized return converts the total gain into an equivalent yearly rate, so you can fairly compare investments held for different lengths of time. This calculator shows both when you provide the years held.
How to use it
- Enter your initial investment.
- Enter the final value (current or sale value).
- Optionally enter the years held for an annualized figure.
ROI examples
| Invested | Now worth | ROI |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | 1,500 | +50% |
| 1,000 | 900 | −10% |
| 5,000 | 8,000 | +60% |
What ROI doesn't capture
- Risk — a high ROI may have come with high risk.
- Fees and taxes — subtract these for true net return.
- Cash flows — simple ROI ignores deposits/withdrawals along the way.
- Inflation — real return is lower than nominal ROI.

Frequently asked questions
How is ROI calculated?
ROI = (final value − initial investment) ÷ initial investment × 100. A result of 50% means you gained half your investment as profit.
What is annualized return?
It converts your total return into an equivalent yearly rate, so investments held for different periods can be compared fairly.
Does ROI include fees and taxes?
No. For a true net return, subtract fees and taxes from the final value before calculating.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up, running entirely in your browser.
