Running Pace Calculator
Enter distance and time to get your pace per km and per mile, plus speed in km/h and mph.
Calculate your running pace
The Running Pace Calculator turns a distance and a time into your pace per kilometer and per mile, plus your speed in km/h and mph. Enter your run and the numbers appear instantly. Whether you are reviewing a training session or planning a race, it gives you the figures runners actually use, all in your browser.
What is running pace?
Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance — usually minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile. It is the language runners think in: "I ran a 5:30 pace" means 5 minutes 30 seconds per kilometer. Pace is more useful than raw speed for training because it directly tells you how fast to run each kilometer to hit a goal time.
How to use it
- Enter the distance and choose kilometers or miles.
- Enter your time as hours, minutes, and seconds.
- Read your pace per km, pace per mile, and speed.
Common race paces
| Race | Distance |
|---|---|
| 5K | 5 km / 3.1 mi |
| 10K | 10 km / 6.2 mi |
| Half marathon | 21.1 km / 13.1 mi |
| Marathon | 42.2 km / 26.2 mi |
Training with pace
Knowing your pace lets you train with purpose. Easy runs should feel comfortable at a conversational pace; tempo runs sit at a "comfortably hard" pace; and intervals are run faster than race pace. By calculating the pace of past runs, you can set realistic targets and track improvement over weeks and months. Negative splits — running the second half faster than the first — are a sign of well-judged pacing.
Pace, speed, and goal times
- Pace per km/mile — how to run each segment.
- Speed (km/h, mph) — handy for treadmill settings.
- Hold a target pace across the full distance to hit a goal finish time.
- Use recent runs to set achievable race goals.

Frequently asked questions
What is running pace?
Pace is the time to cover one unit of distance, usually minutes per kilometer or per mile — for example, a 5:30/km pace.
How do I calculate pace?
Divide your total time by the distance. This tool does it for both km and miles and also shows your speed.
What's the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time per distance (min/km); speed is distance per time (km/h). The tool shows both.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up, running entirely in your browser.
